NotesMint marks were omitted in 1965 - 1967, so the Philadelphia rule does not apply to those years. The coins were intended to memorialize JFK after his assasination. Many of these 1964 half dollars never made it in to circulation as they were hoarded by collectors and non-hobbyists alike. As a result, many fine specimens have been preserved and are available on secondary market.
